Acidophilus the Friendly Bacteria

Acidophilus is often referred to as friendly bacteria which has many health benefits to the human body. Acidophilus is often used in describing different types of bacteria that aid in our digestion of food but the term acidophilus mainly refers to L. acidophilus.

Known for its many age old health benefits, the bacteria is found naturally in our bodies and quite naturally made it into our bodies through the food that we eat.

When acidophilus comes in contact with sugar in our bodies it creates a natural fermentation, the fermentation will consume all the sugars that they can find, while at the same time the sugar will be turned into lactic acid. Converting the sugar creates a unique taste, and it lowers the pH of food and liquid in our bodies.

One of the most well known forms of acidophilus is yogurt and it is easy to pick out the uniquely sour taste of lactic acid when eating yogurt. A rich source acidophilus is found in foods like, garlic, soybeans, bananas, carrots, garbanzo beans and rice starch. Fermented foods like Kimchi and Sauerkraut are also another great source of acidophilus.

When acidophilus breaks down, lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide is released, creating toxic conditions to force out harmful bacteria, parasites, and other organisms. The break down of acidophilus also helps in our digestion of food.
